Heralds don\u2019t bite. London\u2019s civic arms date back to about 1380, and the earliest reference to the officer of arms at the College of Arms is 1334. You can read more on the Wikipedia page: [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/English_heraldry#14th_century\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Link<\/a>]\n<p>In the 1390s, Johannes de Bado Aureo published\u00a0<em>Tactatus de Armis<\/em>, but the only versions of it I can locate are outside the 14th century window. It\u2019s unlikely the text changed much, since it took so long to make a book.<br \/><em>De arte heraldica<\/em>, by de Bado Aureo, c. 1440-1450<br \/>Bodleian Library Images: [<a href=\"http:\/\/bodley30.bodley.ox.ac.uk:8180\/luna\/servlet\/view\/search\/when\/c.%201440-1450?q=%22coats%20of%20arms%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Link<\/a>]\n<p>Powell\u2019s Roll (MS Ashmole 804), which dates c. 1345-1351 has been digitized by the Bodleian Library &#8211; you can view those images here: [<a href=\"http:\/\/bodley30.bodley.ox.ac.uk:8180\/luna\/servlet\/view\/search?QuickSearchA=QuickSearchA&amp;q=Shelfmark%3D%22MS.+Ashmole+804%22&amp;search=Search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Link<\/a>]\n<p>If we look to non-period sources, there are plenty of English Armorials that list not only the Royal arms, but civic arms, and the arms of the general nobility.<\/p>\n<p><em>The General Armory of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales\u00a0<\/em>(1884), by Sir Bernard Burke.<br \/>Internet Archive: [<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/generalarmoryofe00burk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Link<\/a>]Supplement that begins the general armorial: [<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/generalarmoryofe00burk#page\/n94\/mode\/1up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Link<\/a>]\n<p>If you compare a source like Burke\u2019s\u00a0<em>General Armory<\/em> to something like this list of the Knights of the Garter [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldica.org\/topics\/orders\/garterlist.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Link<\/a>] in order to date items. Burke\u2019s doesn\u2019t include images &#8211; just blazons &#8211; but it has a whole section in the front about how heraldry works. And there are other online resources to understand how to decipher a blazon, such as this one on the SCA Heraldry site: [<a href=\"http:\/\/heraldry.sca.org\/armory\/primer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Link<\/a>] \u00a0There is also the official <a href=\"http:\/\/www.burkespeerage.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Burke\u2019s Peerage website<\/a>, which has images &#8211; but again, no dates.<\/p>\n<p>The 107th edition of Burke\u2019s appears to maybe have dates associated with each entry, but it is difficult for me to tell given the inability to zoom in on the few preview pages available. The book is VERY expensive, so check your library &#8211; [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcat.org\/title\/burkes-peerage-baronetage-and-knightage\/oclc\/52621466&amp;referer=brief_results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Worldcat Link<\/a>] It may be that it won\u2019t circulate (given it\u2019s replacement cost), which means it probably won\u2019t be allowed to go out on ILL. But you could see where the closest copy to you is and then have a field trip!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/66.media.tumblr.com\/9f3fd5b6a103a0c8d34743e531bbb2fb\/tumblr_inline_nc0c0sTw3D1qh6vl6.gif?w=840&#038;ssl=1\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You might also try:<\/p>\n<p><em>Anglo-Norman armory two: an ordinary of thirteenth-century armorials<\/em> (1984), by Cecil R.
