You can submit a question to them, but they have been on vacation for some time. However, they have several articles as well as their past letters that you can consult.<\/p>\n<p>They have a link to a primer on Scottish Names, [<a href=\"http:\/\/medievalscotland.org\/scotnames\/scotnames101.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scottish Names 101<\/a>], as well as several other articles about both Gaelic (Highland) and lowland names [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.s-gabriel.org\/names\/scottish.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Link<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>As for Moira MacDonald, here is what the Academy has spread across several of their archived letters:<\/p>\n<p>&lt;Moira&gt; is an English phonetic spelling of &lt;Ma\/ire&gt;, the Irish form of &lt;Mary&gt;.\u00a0 (The slash represents an accent over the previous letter).\u00a0 We haven\u2019t found evidence that &lt;Moira&gt; was used during the Society\u2019s period, so we recommend that you avoid it.<br \/>-1050, Academy of St. Gabriel [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.panix.com\/~gabriel\/public-bin\/showfinal.cgi?1050+0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Link<\/a>]\n<blockquote>\n<pre>&lt;Moira&gt; is an Anglicization of &lt;Ma\/ire&gt;, the Irish form of &lt;Mary&gt;. Unfortunately, this Anglicization appears to have been invented after the SCA period.\u00a0 We've found no evidence that it was used in period, and &lt;Ma\/ire&gt; itself was extremely rare as a personal name in Ireland until the 17th century: there are a few examples from the<br \/>15th and 16th centuries, and the earliest known instance is an isolated 14th century example.\u00a0 The Irish considered the name too sacred for ordinary use; instead they used &lt;Ma\/el Muire&gt; 'devotee of Mary'. [4]\u00a0 (The slash stands for an acute accent over the preceding vowel.)\u00a0 This was pronounced roughly MA VOOR-(y)eh, where the &lt;y&gt; in parentheses stands for a very, very lightly pronounced y as in &lt;yes&gt;. [5]-1440, Academy of St. Gabriel [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.panix.com\/~gabriel\/public-bin\/showfinal.cgi?1440+0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Link<\/a>]<\/pre>\n<pre>&lt;Muirenn&gt; is a fine Gaelic feminine name for your period [1].\u00a0 It is pronounced somewhere between MOOR-en and MOOR-yen, where the OO is pronounced as in &lt;moo&gt;.\u00a0 This name is not related to &lt;Moira&gt;, a modern<br \/>English phonetic spelling of &lt;Ma\/ire&gt;, which is the Gaelic form of &lt;Mary&gt; [2]. The slash in that name indicates an accent on the preceding letter.<br \/>-1709, Academy of St. Gabriel [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.panix.com\/~gabriel\/public-bin\/showfinal.cgi?1709+0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Link<\/a>]<\/pre>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For MacDonald, in period this simply meant \u201cson of Donald,\u201d not \u201cpart of the MacDonald clan\u201d [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.panix.com\/~gabriel\/public-bin\/showfinal.cgi?260+0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Link \u2013 St. Gabriel<\/a>]\n<p>The SCA Heraldry website also has an article on feminine Scottish names [<a href=\"http:\/\/heraldry.sca.org\/names\/scottishfem.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Link<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d also encourage you to consult the herald\u2019s table at an event, or get in touch with your local\/regional\/kingdom herald for help. There are \u201cbook heralds\u201d and \u201ccourt heralds\u201d \u2013 you want one of the former for help with research. I\u2019m not a herald \u2013 I\u2019m just a librarian. \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n<p>You could also post to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/SCAHeraldryChat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SCA Heraldry Chat Facebook Group<\/a> to get some guidance as well.<\/p>\n<p>All of that being said, don\u2019t feel too pressured to have a surname nailed down before you go to your first event. A first name is enough \u2013 I still haven\u2019t submitted my paperwork for my \u201cmore period than locative\u201d surname.
