Where did we learn it from, and how did it become such a generic faire\/SCA staple?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I reached out the the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/scagarb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SCA Garb<\/a> group on Facebook for more information about the Irish Overdress and a little bit of an SCA History lesson.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, the proper name for the\u00a0\u201cIrish overdress\u201d is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reconstructinghistory.com\/articles\/irish-articles\/the-shinrone-gown-an-irish-dress-from-the-elizabethan-age.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shinrone gown<\/a>, which dates from the 16th century. Reconstructing History has a pattern [<a href=\"http:\/\/store.reconstructinghistory.com\/gaelic-irishwoman-package.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Some of the bits of the history lesson are quoted below. I have removed names, since the group is closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c&#8217;Irish Overdress\u2019 was a RenFaire misinterpretation of some of Lucas De Heere\u2019s prints of Irish Women which was adopted and stuck because there was so little to go on and so little research into Irish clothing. If you want to throw together some garb that can do double duty at RenFaires and SCA, or if you\u2019re trying to stock your Gold Key with something quick and easy, then the\u00a0\u201cIrish Overdress\u201d that\u2019s available in <a href=\"http:\/\/sewing.patternreview.com\/Patterns\/6695\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">commercial patterns<\/a>\u00a0easily found at your local craft store will work.
