I am going for 13th Century German and the name would be Marie Marschall of Seareach (because I&#8217;m original like that). I found documentation for Marschall, but I&#8217;m not sure it is one the Heralds will accept. Do you have any resources or direction for me?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I consulted with a <a href=\"https:\/\/kaloethina.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Herald Buddy<\/a> about Marschall (because everything else should be fine &#8211; Maria is well documented and SCA groups as locative bynames are cool) and found some things.<\/p>\n<p>First of all\u00a0\u201cMarschall\u201d has been registered before, so we have that documentation from the Online System of Commentary and Response:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&lt;Marschall&gt; &#8211; R&amp;W, p. 300, lists a &lt;John Marschal&gt; in 1296 and a &lt;Rainald le mareschal&gt; in 1140. \u201cSurnames in 15th Century York\u201d, URL:<a href=\"http:\/\/heraldry.sca.org\/heraldry\/laurel\/names\/york15\/surnames-alphabetical.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/heraldry.sca.org\/heraldry\/laurel\/names\/york15\/surnames-alphabetical.htm<\/a>, lists Mareshall and Marshall. \u201cAn Index to the 1296 Lay Subsidy Rolls for Rutland, England\u201d, under the Bynames section, URL:<a href=\"http:\/\/heraldry.sca.org\/heraldry\/laurel\/names\/Rutland\/bynamesalphabetically.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/heraldry.sca.org\/heraldry\/laurel\/names\/Rutland\/bynamesalphabetically.htm<\/a>, lists Mareschall. Based on these examples, we believe &lt;Marschall&gt; to be a reasonable spelling variant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Unfortunately, this documents the name to Germany, not England, and German and English aren\u2019t compatible languages.<\/p>\n<p>Truth is, Maria Marschall of Seareach is totally documentable for England. I can find some <a href=\"https:\/\/familysearch.org\/search\/record\/results?count=20&amp;query=%2Bsurname%3Amarschall~%20%2Bbirth_place%3Agermany~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1100-1600~\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marschalls in Germany via FamilySearch<\/a>, but they\u2019re all super late period.
