This is just a place for me, Ouyang Yingzhao, formerly and occasionally still Leah Jolifaunt, AKA Marti Fuerst, to put random musings and bits of information related to calligraphy and illumination and my research interests as part of the Society for Creative Anachronism.

Dear Leah (a.k.a. Marti),
Having read your posts on Tang Dynasty clothing construction esp. re: the making of your large sleeved gown and the difficulties you experienced with respect to the finishing of its edges, one thing I’ve found in my own research (I’m in Tree-Girt-Sea btw) is that edges can be finished by simply (and quickly) passing them near a flame. When I first learned of this (via a videotape on the construction of contemporary Chinese dancing clothes and which was produced by the Taiwan Ministry of Culture — or something like, I forget) I could hardly believe it(!), but since then I have tried it and it does work.
Anyway, I hope this helps.
P.S. Tang Dynasty clothes are my favorite!
P.S.S. Have you heard of the Han Couture Design Competitions? The last one that I know of took place in 2013 in NYC and videos of its extant fashion shows (they’ve been three) are on YouTube.
Thanks for the tip, Marie! I’ll have to try this. The gauze is way too pretty not to use for the large-sleeved gown.
I haven’t heard of those competitions, but I will definitely be checking out those videos!
Would you allow your article, “What NOT to say to Volunteers,” to be shared if credit is given to you? It *desperately* needs to be shared among some SCA folks… Some are being ‘cute’ and some really have come to hate what they are doing. Nevertheless, they need reminding that without the thing they no longer want to do, we do not have our organization without folks who step up to do that job they hate.
Of course! Share away, but yes, I’d appreciate credit and a link back. <3
There doesn’t seem to be a link to follow this blog. Am I missing something?
Ooo, like an email alert or an RSS feed? I don’t think I have something like that installed, but I will look into it and let you know!
Form added! Enjoy!
